B2M Candlelight Vigil
Houston-based non-profit Bee Busy announces candlelight vigil against violence in response to the murder of 32-year-old Mark Carson over the weekend.
HOUSTON, TX—May 21, 2013-- The senseless and tragic murder of New York City resident Marc Carson in Greenwich Village late on Friday is another heartbreaking reminder that despite political and social progress in recent years, LGBT people continue to be singled out for discrimination, abuse and even deadly violence.
New York City officials are investigating Mr. Carson’s murder as a hate crime due to eyewitness reports of the assailant using homophobic language in the moments leading up to the terrifying shooting, in the heart of one of America’s most iconic gay neighborhoods.
It is especially sad that this horrific crime took place just blocks from the Stonewall Inn, one of the world’s most enduring symbols of the struggle for LGBT equality.
“All of us at Bee Busy share in the community’s outrage over this crime and join with all who send Mr. Carson’s family and loved ones our heartfelt condolences. We wish them strength and comfort in the days ahead,” states Bee Busy staff member and B2M leader, Ivan Prater.
Please join community members, elected officials, LGBT community leaders, health leaders and allies on Thursday, May 23 at 7:00pm in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Houston Garden Center at Hermann Park to denounce hate violence and mourn this senseless death. The tragedy of Carson’s death is a reminder that anti-gay bigotry and discrimination still exist everywhere; including in places like Houston which violence against gays is on the rise.
